Phyna Questions BBNaija’s Relevance, Says Show No Longer Produces Standout Stars

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and winner, Phyna, has voiced concerns over the current state of the popular reality television show, suggesting it no longer prepares contestants for long-term success after the competition.

Speaking during a recent livestream, Phyna argued that many former housemates struggle to build sustainable careers because they rely on the same limited fanbase. According to her, the audience support does not grow but merely shifts from one contestant to another each season.

She explained that the lack of new followers makes it difficult for ex-housemates to maintain relevance once the show ends, noting that the fanbase is no longer expanding in a meaningful way.

Phyna also claimed that Big Brother Naija has lost much of the credibility it once enjoyed. She said the recognition and respect previously associated with being an alumnus of the show have significantly declined.

According to her, identifying as a former BBNaija housemate no longer commands the same attention or influence it did in earlier seasons.

The reality TV star further suggested that many contestants appear confident and stylish while in the house but struggle to maintain that momentum once the cameras stop rolling.

Phyna, whose real name is Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, emerged winner of the seventh edition of Big Brother Naija, themed Level Up, on October 2, 2022. She secured the title with 40.74 percent of the votes, defeating fellow finalist Bryann.

Her victory earned her a grand prize of ₦100 million, making her the second female winner in the history of the show after Mercy Eke, who won in 2019.

Phyna’s remarks have sparked renewed debate online about the evolving influence of Big Brother Naija and the challenges contestants face in turning reality TV fame into lasting careers.
