Peter Obi Visits Flood-Ravaged Niger State, Donates ₦20m to Support Victims

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has visited Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, where a catastrophic flash flood claimed over 153 lives, displaced thousands, and left entire communities in ruin.

Accompanied by former Minister Senator Nenadi Usman and party spokesperson Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi expressed deep sympathy for the victims and solidarity with the state government as they grapple with one of the worst natural disasters to hit the region in recent years.

“Today, along with Sen. Nenadi Usman and Dr. Yunusa Tanko, I travelled to Niger State to condole and show solidarity with the Governor and the good people of the state over the devastating floods,” Obi shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Obi revealed that he had previously reached out to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago from the UK to offer his condolences but insisted on visiting the affected communities personally. He was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, with whom he discussed the urgent needs of survivors.

According to figures from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the death toll from the floods has climbed to 153, with over 1,000 individuals still missing.

More than 3,000 people have been displaced, and critical infrastructure—including three major bridges—has been washed away. Several communities, including Ndayako and Raba, suffered extensive property damage.

The tragedy unfolded after days of torrential rainfall caused flash floods that overwhelmed roads, homes, and farmlands. Emergency services continue to face serious access challenges due to submerged routes and damaged bridges. Officials warn the death toll could rise as search and rescue efforts remain hampered.

Some families have been shattered beyond recognition. One civil servant, Mohammed Tanko, reportedly lost 15 relatives and his ancestral home in the disaster.

Obi’s Intervention: ₦20 Million in Aid and a National Call to Action

In a move welcomed by local leaders and residents, Obi pledged an initial donation of ₦20 million to support emergency relief efforts and help displaced families.

“This is not just a Niger State tragedy — it is a national one. As Nigerians, we must stand together during times of grief and difficulty,” Obi stated.

He urged the Federal Government, NEMA, and all well-meaning Nigerians to step in with aid, warning that climate-induced disasters are becoming increasingly common across the country.

So far in 2024, flooding incidents have claimed over 321 lives across 34 states, according to national disaster monitoring agencies — highlighting the urgent need for coordinated national response strategies and climate adaptation infrastructure.

Obi concluded his visit by praying for the families of the deceased and those still missing, reaffirming his commitment to “standing with the people not just in words, but in action.”

“May Niger State find peace and restoration. We must never become numb to the suffering of our fellow Nigerians,” he said.
