The House of Representatives today witnessed defections from the opposition as one PDP member, Hon. Peter Akpanke, and one Labour Party (LP) member, Hon. Paul Nnamchi, formally joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defections, announced during plenary, underscore growing momentum for the ruling party.
They join a recent wave in which 24 opposition members transitioned to the APC, signalling deepening challenges for PDP and LP.
Analysts describe this as consolidation of power ahead of 2027 elections.
Defectors cited “alignment with APC policies” and desire for greater political impact. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas welcomed them, framing their moves as endorsements of APC’s leadership
Opposition leaders decried the trend, warning of democratic weakening and urging voters to remain vigilant. Civil society groups called for electoral reforms to address the underlying motives for mass party-switching.
Still, the APC has increased its representation and looks poised to leverage this strength in upcoming legislative sessions and political positioning.
