PDP Counters Umahi, Asserts Position as Strong Opposition in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected recent comments made by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in which he claimed there is no longer any viable opposition party in the state.

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected recent comments made by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in which he claimed there is no longer any viable opposition party in the state.

In a press statement issued by the PDP Chairman in Ebonyi, Mr. Onyemaechi Nwele, the party described Umahi’s assertions as “misleading and intentionally deceptive,” insisting that the PDP remains a resilient and organized opposition force with a clear roadmap for reclaiming political dominance in the state.

“I feel compelled to address recent pronouncements by Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the former governor of Ebonyi State and current Minister of Works,” Nwele said. “His claim that no political opposition exists in the state, suggesting a smooth ride for Governor Francis Nwifuru, is a distortion of reality.”

Nwele emphasized that the PDP continues to command a strong grassroots presence and is actively working toward a political resurgence. He affirmed the party’s ambition to regain control of the Ebonyi State government and increase its representation in the state legislature through the ballot box in 2027.

The PDP Chairman also criticized what he described as Umahi’s strategic politicking, claiming the minister is primarily concerned with securing his political relevance amid changing dynamics at the federal level. According to Nwele, Umahi’s public praise of Governor Nwifuru is less about the performance of the current administration and more about positioning himself for future opportunities, possibly including a return to the Senate.

“Senator Umahi’s remarks appear to be part of a broader effort to align himself with the governor in preparation for potential political uncertainties ahead of the 2027 elections,” Nwele noted. “But the people of Ebonyi know the truth—and the PDP remains a strong contender in the state’s political space.”

Nwele urged party members and supporters to remain focused and ignore what he described as “political distractions,” assuring them that the PDP is building momentum to mount a serious challenge in the next election cycle.
