A prominent founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of its Board of Trustees, Adamu Waziri, has formally resigned from the party and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a loss of ideological direction and credibility.
Waziri announced his resignation on Monday at his Dogo Tebo Ward in Potiskum, Yobe State, fulfilling the PDP constitutional requirement of notifying the ward chapter.
Speaking to supporters, Waziri lamented the current state of the PDP, accusing its leadership of straying from its foundational values and failing to offer Nigerians a credible opposition alternative.
“This decision was not easy, but it was necessary. The PDP has lost its way and no longer represents the ideals we once stood for. I am joining a new political movement that can restore faith in democracy and governance,” he said.
Waziri urged his supporters to follow him to the ADC, which he described as a platform with renewed purpose and commitment to national development.
In a dramatic turn, Malam Muhammad Bomai, the PDP Ward Chairman in Dogo Tebo, also announced his resignation from the party and immediate defection to the ADC. Bomai, who represented the local party leadership, called Waziri “a pillar of the PDP whose exit marks a significant loss.”
“Waziri has been an institution within the PDP. His departure leaves a deep void, and I share his vision for a better Nigeria. That’s why I am also moving to the ADC today,” Bomai said.
Waziri’s defection is seen as a major blow to the PDP, particularly in Yobe State, where he has long been a political heavyweight. His move to the ADC may signal a growing trend of realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
