Pakistan intensifies mediation in Iran–U.S. tensions

Fresh diplomatic activity is underway as Pakistan intensifies efforts to mediate talks linked to the ongoing Iran–U.S. tensions.

Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Friday for high-level discussions as part of renewed diplomatic engagements in the region. According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Munir was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni upon arrival, with Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also present at the reception.

The visit marks Munir’s second trip to Tehran as Islamabad continues efforts to facilitate dialogue aimed at easing tensions and advancing peace talks between the relevant parties. Pakistan previously played a role in securing a temporary ceasefire on April 8 and later hosted high-level U.S.–Iran discussions on April 11 and 12, the first such meetings since 1979.

During the current visit, sources cited by Anadolu Agency said Munir is expected to discuss Iran–U.S. talks, regional stability, and other key security issues. Islamabad has recently stepped up efforts to push for a second round of direct talks between both sides as part of its broader mediation strategy.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the ongoing diplomatic engagement as a critical phase, noting Pakistan’s involvement signals an important turning point in the process.

He added that despite continued talks, significant differences remain between Tehran and Washington, describing the gaps as “deep and significant”.
