Pakistan a Reliable Partner in Nigeria’s Fight Against Terror – High Commissioner

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, retired Maj.-Gen. Sohail Khan, has reaffirmed his country’s strong partnership with Nigeria, describing Pakistan as a “reliable ally” in the global fight against terrorism.

Khan made the remarks Monday night in Abuja during an event hosted by the High Commission to mark Pakistan’s National Day and Defence Day. Although Pakistan usually celebrates its National Day on August 14, this year’s event was shifted to September to coincide with Defence Day celebrations.

Pakistan’s Global Role

Highlighting his country’s achievements since independence in 1947, the envoy said Pakistan had evolved into a respected international player, contributing to peace, development, and security worldwide.

“Today, our nation stands tall on the world stage—contributing to global peace, economic growth, and human development,” Khan said. “Pakistan is a key player in international forums, a trusted partner in counterterrorism efforts, and a voice for justice in regions like Kashmir and Palestine.”

He noted that Pakistan has deployed more than 200,000 troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions since 1960, underscoring its dedication to global stability.

Economic and Natural Strengths

Khan also pointed to Pakistan’s economic and agricultural strengths, describing the country as one of the world’s top producers of cotton, rice, sugarcane, wheat, mangoes, dates, and oranges. He added that Pakistan is also a leading exporter of sports goods.

Beyond economics, the envoy highlighted Pakistan’s natural wonders, including the second-highest mountain in the world, K2, and five of the world’s 14 highest peaks.

Military and Security Contributions

Paying tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces, ranked 12th globally in the 2025 Global Firepower Index, Khan emphasized their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

“Our armed forces have shown extraordinary courage and sacrifice, with over 80,000 lives lost in the fight against terrorism. Their resilience safeguards our homeland while contributing to global peace,” he said.

He also referenced the success of Operation Bunyanum Marsoos against Indian aggression in May 2025 as evidence of Pakistan’s military strength and readiness.

Pakistan–Nigeria Relations

Turning to bilateral relations, Khan described the ties between Pakistan and Nigeria as long-standing and rooted in “brotherhood, trust, and strategic partnership.”

According to him, the relationship is marked by rapidly growing trade, economic cooperation, and strengthened defence and security collaboration across all military services.

“As we commemorate our Independence and Defence Day, let us renew our commitment to building a stronger Pakistan—one that leads in innovation, peace, and prosperity. Together, we are unbreakable,” Khan declared.
