Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has addressed concerns regarding the potential implementation of Sharia Law in some South-Western states, including Oyo. He clarified that his administration will not oppose any actions that align with the Constitution.
This clarification followed media reports suggesting that the Oyo State Government planned to challenge the initiative in court. Governor Makinde explained that members of the public could approach the Sharia Panel if they choose to, noting that it could serve as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
However, he emphasized that the Constitution still empowers the court to settle all disputes, and his administration will always adhere to its provisions.
Governor Makinde made these remarks at the 2025 Iftar Programme, organized by the Oyo State Government, which marked the sixth such event since he assumed office in 2019. The event took place at the Presidential Lodge in the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.
The governor reiterated that his administration is committed to fostering religious harmony and unity in the state, emphasizing that no one will be allowed to sow division. He acknowledged that some individuals might resort to using divisive tactics, including stoking religious discord, to win elections. However, his government remains focused on sustainable development for the benefit of the state’s residents and future generations.
Governor Makinde also expressed his gratitude to the Islamic faithful in the state for their prayers, support, and cooperation, which have contributed to the state’s progress and growth. He extended thanks to the legislators, the judiciary, and the people of the state for their continued cooperation, as well as commended the service chiefs for their efforts in maintaining safety and security.
The governor urged everyone to avoid actions that could threaten the state’s peaceful atmosphere and unity.
