Oyebanji Dissolves Ekiti Executive Council Ahead of 2026 Governorship Election

As political activities begin to build momentum ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has announced the immediate dissolution of the State Executive Council.

The announcement came through a statement issued late Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Habibat Adubiaro, who confirmed that all political appointees in the cabinet are affected by the directive.

According to the SSG, outgoing commissioners and special advisers are expected to hand over to the most senior civil servant or permanent secretary within their respective ministries, departments, and agencies.

Governor Oyebanji, in the statement, expressed gratitude to the outgoing officials for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors.

“Governor Oyebanji thanks the affected members of the State Executive Council and wishes them success in their future endeavours,” the SSG stated.

However, the dissolution exempts a few key officials from the directive. The following individuals will retain their positions:

  • Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice
  • Commissioner for Health and Human Services
  • Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security
  • Commissioner for Education
  • Commissioner for Works
  • Commissioner for Trade, Investment, Industry and Cooperatives
  • Special Adviser on Special Education and Social Inclusion
  • Special Adviser on Lands, Survey and e-GIS

Also unaffected are three Directors General who are part of the State Executive Council:

  • Director General, Office of Transformation and Service Delivery (OTSD)
  • Director General, SDGs and Project Monitoring
  • Director General, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP)

The restructuring comes as Governor Oyebanji, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), prepares to seek a second term in office. He was sworn in on October 16, 2022, following his victory in the 2022 governorship election.

The move is widely viewed as part of early political positioning and a strategic shake-up as the 2026 election approaches.
