Over 95,000 People Die by Suicide Worldwide in 2026 – WHO Data

Suicide continues to take a heavy toll worldwide, with over 95,000 deaths recorded so far in 2026, according to Worldometers, which draws on data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The early-year figures highlight that suicide remains a significant global public health challenge. WHO estimates that about 727,000 people die by suicide each year, with millions more attempting to take their own lives.

Suicide affects people of all ages and regions, but young people are particularly vulnerable. In 2021, it was the third leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 29. Beyond the individual, suicide leaves lasting emotional, social, and economic impacts on families, communities, and societies.

Contrary to common misconceptions, most suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries. WHO reports that nearly three-quarters (73%) of global suicides happen in these regions, where access to mental health care and support services is often limited.

While mental health conditions such as depression and alcohol use disorders play a role, many suicides occur impulsively during crises. These crises may be triggered by financial stress, relationship difficulties, chronic illness or pain, exposure to violence, displacement, or intense feelings of isolation.

Certain populations face higher risks, including refugees and migrants, indigenous peoples, LGBTI individuals, prisoners, and others who experience discrimination, social exclusion, or limited access to support.

WHO emphasizes that suicide is preventable through coordinated public health measures rather than isolated interventions. Proven strategies include restricting access to lethal means, promoting responsible media reporting, teaching life skills to adolescents, and ensuring early identification and follow-up care for those at risk. Many of these approaches are low-cost yet can save thousands of lives every year.
