Ogun workers begin strike over N82bn pension deductions

Organised labour in Ogun State comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) has directed the entire state workforce to commence an indefinite strike action.

The decision, announced on Monday, stems from the state government’s failure to remit N82 billion in contributory pension deductions over the past 14 years.

This was revealed in a joint statement signed by the leadership of the NLC, TUC, and JNC, and made available to journalists.

According to the statement, the indefinite strike was unanimously approved during a statewide congress held on Monday. Workers resolved to withdraw their services in protest against the persistent non-compliance with the Ogun State Pension Reform Law of 2008 and its 2013 amendment.

The amended 2013 law introduced the Contributory Pension Scheme, which mandates both the employer and employee to contribute 7.5 per cent of the worker’s basic salary monthly. These funds are to be managed by accredited pension fund administrators a process the unions say has been neglected by the state government.
