NSC Mandates Insurance and Vehicle Certification for National Sports Festival Contingents After Kano Tragedy

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced new mandatory safety regulations for all participating contingents in future National Sports Festivals. The directive includes compulsory insurance coverage for athletes and mechanical certification and insurance for all official vehicles used during the event.
This policy shift follows the tragic death of 22 athletes from Kano State in a motor accident while returning from the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the ‘Gateway Games 2024’, held in Ogun State.
In a statement released by Kehinde Ajayi, Director of Press at the NSC, the commission emphasized that the new safety measures are compulsory and have been communicated to all state contingents.
“Contingents must obtain comprehensive insurance coverage, and all vehicles used for official transport during the Sports Festival must be mechanically certified and fully insured. This requirement has been communicated to all participating states and will be strictly enforced moving forward,” Ajayi stated.
To ensure adherence, the NSC will conduct a compliance audit before upcoming festivals, checking for full implementation of safety, insurance, and welfare standards.
Additionally, the commission pledged to strengthen on-ground monitoring during national events to prevent further tragedies. Ajayi revealed plans for a post-Games safety roundtable, bringing together all State Sports Commissions to evaluate travel protocols and share safety best practices.
“This incident must not be in vain. It must inspire all levels of government, federal and state authorities alike, to enhance the systems that protect those who dedicate their strength and spirit to represent our nation in sports,” the statement read.
While individual state sports councils are currently responsible for the transportation of their contingents, the NSC highlighted the urgent need for a coordinated national safety and welfare framework.
Ajayi further disclosed that the commission is in close contact with the Kano State government and is committed to maintaining strong collaboration in responding to the heartbreaking incident.
