Northern CAN decries Benue killings, seeks urgent FG intervention

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has condemned the ongoing killings and destruction of property in Benue State, calling for urgent and decisive intervention from both the federal and state governments.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Yakubu Pam, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, particularly the repeated attacks that have left communities devastated.

“The scale and frequency of these attacks have made it nearly impossible for farmers to access their lands, while ordinary citizens live in constant fear,” the statement read.

Pam urged the government to deploy all available resources to tackle the crisis effectively. He specifically called on Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to strengthen local security arrangements by empowering community-based vigilante groups.

He recommended a model similar to the Amotekun Corps in the South-West, the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno, and local vigilante groups in Zamfara State all of which have demonstrated success in addressing insecurity at the grassroots level.

“The lives of the people the governor was elected to protect remain in grave danger without prompt and coordinated action,” Pam warned.

Benue State has witnessed a surge in violence in recent weeks, with coordinated attacks by suspected armed herders reportedly leaving hundreds dead across four local government areas.
