NITDA Champions Inclusive Digital Skills Development for Persons with Disabilities

As part of its Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) programme, NITDA trained 50 persons with disabilities in Abuja, providing them the tools and knowledge to engage effectively in the digital economy.

Speaking at the event, NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, said the initiative demonstrates the agency’s commitment to making accessibility a core part of Nigeria’s digital transformation. “In many cases, the problem is not the absence of digital tools but the lack of accessibility”, he noted, adding that platforms without assistive technologies, captioned content, or accessible websites often shut out persons with disabilities.

Inuwa emphasized that the programme aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes inclusivity in national development. “When equipped with the right skills and technologies, persons with disabilities become innovators, entrepreneurs, and professionals who contribute meaningfully across sectors”, he said.

Highlighting NITDA’s wider digital literacy drive, Inuwa said the DL4ALL initiative is part of the agency’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, targeting 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030. Since September 2024, over 480,000 Nigerians across 30 states and the FCT have been trained through the programme.

The DG commended Inclusive Friends Association (IFA) and SIMBED for their role in delivering the training, calling it a strong example of government-civil society collaboration.

At the event, SIMBED CEO, Daniel Onunkwo, described the training as a major step toward closing the digital inclusion gap, while IFA Executive Director Grace Jerry, represented by Tracy Agbamu, urged participants to use their skills to promote inclusion within their communities.
