The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh three-day weather outlook, warning of widespread thunderstorms, rain showers, and gusty winds across the country from Monday, July 21, to Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
According to a statement released on NiMet’s official X (formerly Twitter) platform on Sunday, unsettled weather is expected across Northern, Central, and Southern Nigeria, with rainfall of varying intensities and potentially strong winds forecast during the period.
Nationwide Outlook: What to Expect
Northern Region
NiMet forecasts early morning thunderstorms and rain on Monday in Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna.
By Tuesday morning, cloudy skies will dominate much of the region, with thunderstorm activity expected later in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba. Evening storms may affect Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Bauchi, Borno, and Kebbi.
Wednesday is also expected to begin with storms in parts of Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba, with rainfall spreading further to Yobe, Jigawa, Borno, Kebbi, and Kaduna in the evening.
Central States
Cloudy mornings are anticipated across central states, including the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara, throughout the forecast period.
- Monday: Morning thunderstorms over Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa, with moderate rains later in Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, and the FCT.
- Tuesday: Cloudy conditions in the morning, transitioning to moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening across the region.
- Wednesday: Continued rainfall activity, particularly in Kwara, Niger, Plateau, and the FCT.
Southern Region
Southern states are expected to experience a mix of light and heavy rainfall.
- Monday: Morning rains are likely in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, followed by moderate to heavy rainfall later in Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa.
- Tuesday: Showers are expected early in the day in Enugu, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, with heavier rainfall forecast later in Ebonyi, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and surrounding areas.
- Wednesday: Conditions remain unstable, with more rainfall anticipated in the afternoon and evening.
Public Advisory and Safety Tips
NiMet cautioned that strong winds may precede rainfall, particularly in thunderstorm-prone areas. As such, the public is advised to:
- Secure loose outdoor objects
- Avoid driving in heavy rain or through flooded roads
- Disconnect electrical appliances during storms
- Stay away from tall trees or unstable structures
The agency also urged airline operators to obtain up-to-date, airport-specific weather reports for flight planning.
