NIMC Raises Alarm Over Fake NIN Correction Portal Circulating Online

Commission warns Nigerians to avoid fraudulent links, insists all data updates must go through official platform….

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a public warning over a fake online flyer claiming that a free portal for correcting National Identification Number (NIN) details has been launched.

In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the commission cautioned Nigerians against using the suspicious platform, stressing that it is not affiliated with any government-approved service.

“The public is hereby advised not to use the above for modifying their NIN data,” NIMC stated, directing citizens instead to its verified self-service modification portal for all legitimate updates.

The fraudulent flyer, which has gained traction across social media, falsely suggests that the Federal Government authorized the opening of a new correction portal in response to widespread complaints. It carries official-looking logos and messaging, making it appear credible at first glance.

According to the commission, the links embedded in the flyer redirect users to an unfamiliar “gvly.xyz” domain, an indication that the site is not an official government platform and may pose security risks.

The misleading notice also lists several services, including name, gender, and date of birth corrections, in an apparent attempt to lure unsuspecting users into submitting sensitive personal information.

NIMC clarified that all NIN data modifications can only be carried out through its approved channels, warning that engaging with unofficial platforms could expose individuals to fraud, identity theft, or data breaches.

Interestingly, the viral flyer has now been marked with a bold “FAKE” stamp, suggesting it is being reshared by the commission itself as part of efforts to debunk the misinformation.

The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ data and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, verify sources before taking action, and rely solely on official communication channels for identity-related services.

As digital fraud tactics become more sophisticated, authorities continue to emphasize the importance of caution especially when dealing with sensitive personal information like NIN records.
