Nigeria’s Military to Shift Focus to Local Equipment Production

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has announced a strategic shift in the country’s military procurement policy, emphasizing the transition from foreign dependence to local production of military hardware.

The move aims to enhance national security, boost efficiency, and reduce reliance on imported military equipment. The Defence Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to develop and refurbish combat vehicles, arms, ammunition, and other military equipment within Nigeria.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to achieve self-reliance in defense capabilities, ensuring that the military is better equipped to address security challenges. The government believes that local production will not only strengthen the armed forces but also stimulate economic growth through job creation and technological advancement.

The Defence Minister also emphasized the importance of training and capacity building to support this transition, ensuring that military personnel are adequately prepared to operate and maintain locally produced equipment.

This policy shift reflects Nigeria’s commitment to developing a robust and self-sufficient defense industry, positioning the country to better manage its security needs independently.
