Nigeria’s Democracy a Pillar of West African Stability, Declares Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar

In a powerful statement marking Democracy Day, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Thursday hailed the nation’s democratic system as a beacon of stability and a model for West Africa amid escalating political turmoil across the region.

Through his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar emphasized Nigeria’s steadfast commitment to democratic principles—highlighting regular elections, peaceful transfers of power, and unwavering adherence to constitutional governance. He contrasted Nigeria’s resilience with the widespread democratic backsliding witnessed in neighboring countries.

“Nigeria continues to uphold the rule of law, electoral accountability, and active civic participation, which have collectively preserved internal stability and cemented our position as a reliable democratic partner in West Africa,” Tuggar noted.

Acknowledging imperfections within Nigeria’s democratic institutions, he affirmed their strength and durability in an era when democracy faces significant challenges across the subregion.

“In times when democratic governance is increasingly under threat in parts of West Africa, Nigeria stands firm in demonstrating that the pillars of democracy are essential to lasting peace and sustainable development,” he stated.

Tuggar’s remarks come as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) grapples with renewed instability in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, where military coups have disrupted civilian rule.

He reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering support for diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring democracy and insisted that democratic governance must remain central to regional conflict resolution.

Citing Nigeria’s historical role in peacekeeping missions and leadership within ECOWAS, the minister underscored the critical influence of Nigeria’s political stability on the broader West African landscape.

“Democracy is not merely an internal affair; it is a strategic contribution to regional peace. Nigeria’s democratic progress strengthens the entire African democratic project,” Tuggar affirmed.

The minister also commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its strides in economic recovery and political consolidation, expressing optimism that ongoing reforms will pave the way for long-term national prosperity.
