The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has responded to recent media reports alleging an increase in cargo charges at Onne Port, denying any such approval from the agency. In a statement released by the Council, it clarified that the last approved increment of cargo charges was in 2021, and that any claims of increases since then were unfounded and not sanctioned by the NSC.
The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council Akuta Ukeyima, explained in a phone interview that since assuming office as the CEO, there have been no discussions with any terminal operator regarding an increase in charges. He further emphasized that any approved increments that took place were in 2021 and 2023, long before he took office in 2024. These increases followed proper procedures, with thorough consultations with all relevant stakeholders before finalizing any agreements.
The NSC also clarified that the current fees being charged at the West African Container Terminal (WACT) at Onne Port were duly reviewed and approved by the Council. The tariff adjustment implemented by WACT was the result of a comprehensive review process to ensure that the new rates were in line with industry standards and aligned with prevailing economic conditions.
The statement continued, “As the economic regulator of the port sector, the Council ensures that all tariff adjustments are fair, justifiable, and sustainable for both service providers and port users.” It was also noted that the review of charges followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including clearing agents and freight forwarder associations such as the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), and others. These discussions culminated in a mutual agreement to phase the implementation of the new tariff structure to reduce the impact on port users.
The NSC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that tariff adjustments are reasonable and beneficial for both the service providers and the port users, ensuring the sector operates within an acceptable and transparent framework.
