A new partnership with Airbus could reshape Nigeria’s emergency medical evacuation system as the Federal Government moves to develop a nationwide ground-to-air emergency medical response network.
This was part of discussions held by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, during a visit to France approved by President Bola Tinubu, where he inspected emergency medical equipment and engaged with executives of the European aerospace manufacturer.
The proposed system is designed to improve emergency healthcare delivery by linking air ambulance services with existing ground-based medical infrastructure, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas where access to rapid response care remains limited.
Airbus, a leading European aerospace company known for producing commercial aircraft, helicopters, and defence and space systems, operates across France, Germany, and Spain, and provides technology for governments and emergency services worldwide.
During the visit, Pate toured an Airbus emergency care helicopter at a French government-supported air ambulance facility in Lyon, where he observed models of rapid evacuation and critical care transport systems.
He said Nigeria is working to expand both public and private healthcare infrastructure to strengthen emergency response services nationwide, noting that reforms are ongoing under the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme.
According to him, the government is restructuring emergency systems to improve response times across urban and rural communities, with plans to enhance ambulance networks and strengthen coordination between federal and state health authorities.
Nigeria has in recent years intensified efforts to improve emergency medical services at both national and subnational levels.
Back in October 2025, the Kaduna State Government launched the Kaduna State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (KADSEMSAS), a 24-hour emergency response framework with dispatch centres, trained personnel, and a fleet of equipped ambulances.
Similarly, the Anambra State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (ASEMSAS) has been operational, providing emergency care support across communities.
