In a daring pre-dawn assault thwarted by Nigerian troops, Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists launched an attack on the Naval Base at Lake Chad Fish Dam around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
The insurgents aimed to destroy newly acquired swamp bogeys—vital equipment recently procured by the Borno State Government to clear waterways and improve security in the region.
According to an official statement from the Nigerian Army’s X (formerly Twitter) account, personnel at the Naval Base swiftly engaged the attackers, receiving timely reinforcements from troops stationed in nearby Baga.
The intense firefight lasted over two hours, during which Nigerian forces successfully repelled the militants, inflicting heavy casualties and recovering improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The statement detailed, “Through coordinated joint land, maritime, and air operations under Operation Hadin Kai, troops neutralized scores of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists attempting to infiltrate the Naval Base.
Despite minimal damage to an ambulance and two other vehicles, the terrorists were forced into retreat without gaining control of the swamp bogeys.”
Several soldiers sustained injuries, but the robust defense preserved critical infrastructure. Air support units continue to pursue fleeing insurgents across the waterways in ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist strongholds in the area.
This latest confrontation underscores the Nigerian military’s commitment to safeguarding strategic assets around Lake Chad amid persistent insurgent threats, marking another significant blow to Boko Haram’s operational capabilities.
