The Nigerian Army has announced plans to intensify its campaign against criminal groups in Plateau State, pairing heightened military operations with community‑level engagement to protect lives, property, and livelihoods as the planting season begins.
General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Folunsho Oyinlola, made the commitment on Thursday while meeting with leaders from Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. He said the army will deepen efforts to dislodge armed gangs, expand patrols in volatile areas, and strengthen coordination with other security agencies operating in the region.
Oyinlola also called on community leaders and residents to support security forces, warning that emerging threats remain serious. “We cannot allow Barkin Ladi to relapse into avoidable conflict, especially now that the farming season is commencing, a period vital to the livelihoods of countless families”, he said.
The pledge comes amid a recent surge in violent incidents across the state’s rural communities, underscoring the urgent need for action:
Last week, the Chief of Army Staff ordered the deployment of special forces to Plateau State to support ongoing efforts to contain violence and protect vulnerable populations.
Community leaders have repeatedly raised alarm over attacks targeting farmers, miners, and other civilians, including raids that displace families and disrupt agricultural activities. Local authorities and security agencies are under mounting pressure to stem the violence, with civilians urging more proactive measures to prevent further loss of life and safeguard the state’s fragile stability.
