Nigeria, Türkiye Strengthen Defence Partnerships During Presidential Visit

President Bola Tinubu, alongside Defence Minister, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd) and Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, have conducted a high-level working visit to Ankara, Türkiye, aimed at boosting Nigeria’s defence capabilities and international military cooperation.

The visit, which began on January 26, 2026, focused on enhancing operational readiness, modernising the armed forces, and fostering strategic partnerships to address terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges.

During bilateral talks, Tinubu and his Turkish counterpart signed nine Memoranda of Understanding covering defence, technology, trade, education, and media.

The agreements are designed to facilitate skills transfer, access to advanced technology, and the development of institutional frameworks to strengthen Nigeria’s long-term security and national development.

The delegation also toured Türkiye’s leading defence firms, including ASELSAN, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), and HAVELSAN, reviewing procurement processes, training programs, and research initiatives. Air Marshal Aneke said the engagements would directly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s intelligence, surveillance, and combat support capabilities.

Musa highlighted that the visit reflects the administration’s commitment to equipping the armed forces with modern tools and technologies needed to tackle evolving security threats, while the CAS reaffirmed the Air Force’s dedication to national security and community protection.
