Nigeria Submits Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed it has met the deadline of March 28, 2025, for submitting an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has confirmed it has met the deadline of March 28, 2025, for submitting an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, the bid will only move forward if it receives official support from the Nigerian government.

Nigeria previously lost its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Glasgow, but the NOC is optimistic about the opportunity to bring the prestigious event to Abuja, the nation’s capital.

In a statement from NOC spokesman, Tony Nezianya, the committee emphasized that hosting the 2030 Games would offer Nigeria a unique chance to showcase its development, improve its international standing, and rejuvenate its sports culture.

“Nigeria’s previous experience hosting major events, including the 2003 African Games in Abuja, will serve as a strong foundation to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure demands of the Commonwealth Games,” the statement read. “This event would also serve as a powerful demonstration of the nation’s progress and readiness.”

The Commonwealth Games are set to return to Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026, from March 17 to March 29, after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to rising costs.
