At a key regional trade summit held in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole reaffirmed the country’s commitment to deepening ECOWAS integration.
She emphasized supporting both the ETLS (ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme) and the ECOWAS Common External Tariff.
The Minister acknowledged modest progress but insisted that ambition must match efforts, as intra-African trade remains below 10% in West Africa well behind Asia and Europe
She stressed that harmonized product standards, streamlined customs procedures, and digital trade platforms are critical next steps.
Highlighting ongoing initiatives, she mentioned Nigeria’s establishment of a multi-stakeholder AFCFTA Coordination Committee, and pilot rollout of a Single Window system to reduce bureaucratic delays at border crossings.
Business leaders present voiced support for removing border levies and non-tariff barriers, urging greater political commitment. ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray echoed calls for urgent action to eliminate these persistent obstacles.
Dr. Oduwole concluded on an optimistic note, framing West Africa as a “400 million‑strong market” with immense potential.
She affirmed Nigeria’s readiness to lead in creating a fully integrated regional economy
