Nico Williams Responds Calmly to Bruno Fernandes’ Red Card Comments After Europa Loss

Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has responded calmly to Bruno Fernandes’ post-match remarks following Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over the Spanish side in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League semi-final.

Manchester United secured a commanding away win in Spain with two goals from Fernandes and another from Casemiro. A key moment in the match came when Athletic defender Daniel Vivian was shown a red card for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund inside the box, leading to Fernandes converting the resulting penalty.

After the game, Fernandes backed the referee’s decision during a tense exchange with a journalist who questioned the red card.

When asked about Fernandes’ comments, Williams declined to escalate the issue, telling El Correo via DAZN:

“I saw what he said… In the end, everyone is free to think what they want. We are going to play it cool as always, without getting into controversy… and may the best team win.”

The second leg of the Europa League semi-final will be held next Thursday at Old Trafford, where Athletic Club face an uphill task to overturn the three-goal deficit.
