Nigeria’s new Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has set an uncompromising tone for his tenure, promising to clean up the force and entrench accountability at every level.
Speaking to journalists at the State House, Presidential Villa, shortly after his appointment, Disu described the development as both surprising and humbling. Until his elevation, he served as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police. His appointment followed the resignation of former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, after a request by President Bola Tinubu.
The acting police chief said restoring public confidence would be central to his leadership, stressing that law enforcement must be anchored on partnership with the community.
He pledged to end impunity within the ranks, strengthen internal discipline and ensure that officers operate strictly within the bounds of the law.
Disu also committed to improving human rights compliance through sustained training, closer supervision and firm sanctions against misconduct. Corruption, he said, would attract zero tolerance, adding that ethical conduct and transparency would shape operational standards under his watch.
He acknowledged the weight of expectations that come with the office, noting that references to his past postings serve as both recognition and a reminder of the responsibility ahead.
According to him, the task now is to build a police institution that is trusted, responsive and aligned with democratic values.
