NEITI Boss Orji Begins Terminal Leave Ahead of February 2026 Exit

FG Applauds His Reform-Driven Leadership as Tenure Winds Down.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has approved the request by the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, to commence his statutory terminal leave.

The development comes as Orji prepares to complete his single five-year tenure, which officially ends on February 19, 2026.

Akume, who also chairs the NEITI National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG) confirmed the approval in a statement released on Monday by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF’s office, Segun Imohiosen.

According to the statement, Orji’s notification followed due process and aligned fully with established public service regulations.

The Federal Government commended the NEITI chief for what it described as an exceptional, reform-oriented tenure that strengthened Nigeria’s standing within the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) community.

The statement highlighted Orji’s role in setting up the NEITI Data Centre, a major step that boosted the agency’s technological capabilities and further positioned Nigeria as a frontline EITI-implementing nation.

It also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting NEITI’s independence and advancing transparency reforms crucial to the country’s extractive sector and broader national development goals.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the NSWG, the Federal Government conveys its best wishes to Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji after a meritorious and accomplished service to the nation,” the statement added.
