NCAA Warns International Airlines Over Deportation of Nigerian Passengers

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a strong warning to international airlines, urging them to cease the troubling practice of transporting Nigerian passengers partway to their destinations, only to deport them back to Nigeria.

The NCAA expressed serious concerns over the growing number of complaints from passengers who, after being flown to intermediate transit stops, face deportation due to visa and travel restrictions. This practice has caused significant distress for travelers and tarnished the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

In a statement released on Thursday, Michael Achimugu, the NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, condemned the actions of the airlines. He emphasized that passengers should not have to endure such negative experiences, which are seen as completely unacceptable.

“These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” Achimugu said.

The NCAA reminded airlines that it is their responsibility to ensure passengers are informed about any potential entry obstacles before their journey begins. The authority further emphasized that passengers should never be placed in situations where they are denied entry or forcibly returned to Nigeria only upon arrival at transit points.

Referring to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), Achimugu reiterated that airlines are legally obligated to provide accurate, up-to-date information regarding travel documents and visa requirements before passengers board their flights.

“Airlines must take appropriate measures to screen and provide passengers with accurate, up-to-date information regarding their travel documents and visa requirements before issuing tickets or allowing boarding,” the statement continued.

In response to these ongoing issues, the NCAA announced immediate enforcement measures. The authority warned that any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory actions, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed necessary.

“The NCAA expects the cooperation of all airlines in maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the aviation industry, as well as ensuring the wellbeing of Nigerian passengers,” Achimugu concluded.
