The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted operational clearance for Enugu Air to begin domestic flight services, marking the formal entry of the new airline into the country’s commercial aviation space.
In a statement released on Monday by NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the aviation regulator confirmed that Enugu Air will commence operations under a strategic alliance with XEJet, pending the finalisation of its own Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
The airline was officially unveiled on Monday, July 7, 2025, at a ceremony in Enugu attended by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
Fleet and Operational Structure
Enugu Air is entering the skies with a fleet of three Embraer 170 aircraft, each configured to accommodate approximately 76 passengers. While the airline awaits the conclusion of its AOC process, it has received interim approval to operate using XEJet’s existing certification and regulatory framework.
As part of this agreement, XEJet has undergone a variation process to integrate the Embraer 170 aircraft into its official Operations Specifications meeting the NCAA’s stringent five-phase certification protocol. The move effectively allows XEJet to operate scheduled flights on behalf of Enugu Air, in full compliance with national aviation regulations.
Ticket sales are now active via the XEJet platform, with passengers able to book through a redirected portal on Enugu Air’s official website.
Aligned with Federal Aviation Reform Agenda
The NCAA highlighted that the licensing arrangement aligns with the Aviation Ministry’s 5-Point Agenda, which prioritises support for indigenous carriers, sectoral reform, and ease of doing business.
“The approval granted to Enugu Air is consistent with the Honourable Minister’s reform priorities,” the NCAA stated. “This includes promoting homegrown airlines, ensuring operational safety, and fostering a more competitive and investor-friendly environment within the aviation sector.”
The Authority also reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to safety, security, and consumer protection, adding that it remains focused on building a level playing field for all operators.
What’s Next for Enugu Air?
While Enugu Air takes off under XEJet’s certification, its own full licensing process continues behind the scenes. Upon successful completion of the AOC requirements, the airline is expected to transition to independent operations under its own regulatory credentials.
Industry observers view Enugu Air’s entry as a significant boost to Nigeria’s domestic aviation landscape, especially with its focus on connecting underserved routes and enhancing regional connectivity.
