The National Assembly has announced the suspension of all legislative activities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives until Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in London, United Kingdom.
The decision was made public in a statement issued on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on behalf of the leadership of both chambers.
“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all plenary sessions are hereby suspended until Tuesday, July 22,” the statement read.
Lawmakers have been advised to adjust their schedules to ensure full participation in the burial rites and national mourning activities for the late president.
“All members of the National Assembly are urged to reschedule their engagements to enable full participation in the burial activities of the late President,” Ogunlana added.
The leadership of the Senate and House also extended their heartfelt condolences to President Buhari’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, his wife Aisha Buhari, his children, and the entire Buhari family.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” the statement concluded.
Born in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985, following a coup.
Decades later, he returned to power as a civilian, winning the 2015 presidential election and serving two terms as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.
Buhari leaves behind a legacy marked by a focus on anti-corruption, national security, and infrastructure development. His passing has drawn tributes from leaders across Africa and beyond, reflecting his standing as one of Nigeria’s most influential post-independence figures.
