National Assembly Counters PDP Governors’ Lawsuit, Seeks ₦1 Billion in Damages

The National Assembly has filed a countersuit against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, demanding ₦1 billion in damages.

This follows a legal challenge by the governors over the legality of local government autonomy legislation passed by the legislature.

In the suit, the National Assembly asserts that the governors’ attempt to block reforms aimed at empowering local governments is unconstitutional.

Lawmakers argue that local governments must be financially independent to fulfill their development mandates.

The case has sparked national debate over the balance of power between federal, state, and local governments. Legal experts predict a lengthy court battle that could redefine Nigeria’s democratic structure.
