Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday as a three-storey building collapsed on Asesi Lane, near Adeniji Adele Road on Lagos Island, leaving several occupants injured.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, four individuals have so far been rescued from the debris and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), alongside other first responders, swiftly mobilized to the scene and are continuing rescue operations amidst the rubble.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown at this time, but questions are once again being raised about building integrity and enforcement of construction regulations in Lagos—a city that has witnessed multiple such incidents in recent years.
This latest collapse adds to a growing list of structural failures that have plagued Lagos, in contrast to cities where building regulations are more stringently enforced and accountability measures more robust.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the structural and regulatory lapses that led to the incident.
