Mudashiru Obasa Re-Elected as Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly

Mudashiru Obasa has been re-elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

This comes following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who had taken over the role after Obasa’s removal in January 2025.

Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, was re-elected on Monday after Meranda stepped down, clearing the path for his reinstatement. His re-election was backed by a nomination from Noheem Adams, a former Majority Leader representing Eti-Osa Constituency 1. Obasa was swiftly sworn in as the new Speaker, marking his return to leadership in the House after being ousted just seven weeks ago.

Obasa, who first entered the House in 2007, previously served as Speaker from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025. His tenure faced a serious setback on January 13 when over two-thirds of the 40-member assembly voted to remove him over allegations of misconduct and other offenses. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the first female Speaker in Lagos State, only to resign in March.

The leadership turmoil reached its peak when Obasa vehemently rejected his ouster, claiming that his removal was improper, particularly as it occurred during his absence from the country. He also criticized the military presence at the Assembly during the impeachment process. Despite his claims, 36 lawmakers, loyal to Meranda, affirmed her position as Speaker.

The standoff continued into February, with violent clashes between security agents and legislative workers. In a dramatic return on February 27, Obasa arrived at the Assembly Complex, flanked by heavily armed security personnel, asserting his position as the rightful Speaker despite the opposition from Meranda’s supporters.

With Meranda’s resignation, Obasa’s return to power is expected to bring a resolution to the crisis, but the fallout of the leadership battle within the House remains to be fully seen.
