Mohbad’s Father Appeals Court Decision Upholding Legal Advice That Cleared Naira Marley, Others

The father of the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, has formally appealed a court ruling that upheld the Director of Public Prosecution’s (DPP) legal advice, which exonerated Nigerian artist Naira Marley and others from criminal liability in connection with the singer’s untimely death.

In a move set to reignite public scrutiny over the controversial case, Mohbad’s father is challenging the court’s refusal to nullify the legal advice that effectively cleared the accused of wrongdoing.

His legal team argues that the advice was premature, incomplete, and fails to consider key forensic and circumstantial evidence.

The late Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, died under suspicious circumstances in September 2023, sparking nationwide protests and calls for justice. Many fans and observers pointed fingers at industry figures previously linked to the artist’s reported harassment.

The Lagos State DPP had, however, issued legal guidance stating there was no sufficient basis to press charges against the likes of Naira Marley and Sam Larry, leading to their release. That decision was seen by critics as hasty and opaque.

Legal analysts note that the father’s appeal may not only challenge the state’s prosecutorial discretion but could also open up questions around judicial transparency and public accountability.

“This case transcends individual justice — it’s about rebuilding public trust in the rule of law,” a legal expert told a local media outlet.
