Mexican Mayoral Candidate Yesenia Lara Shot Dead at Campaign Event in Veracruz
A mayoral candidate was tragically killed on Sunday during a campaign event in Texistepec, Veracruz, amid rising tensions in Mexico’s violent political climate. Yesenia Lara, running for mayor under the Morena party, was identified as the victim by local media.
In harrowing footage shared online, chaos unfolded as gunshots rang out during a procession of motorcycles and supporters, all waving Morena flags. Witnesses were seen fleeing in panic, with subsequent images showing lifeless bodies on the street.
Governor Rocío Nahle confirmed the deaths of Lara and three supporters while also reporting three other individuals were wounded. In a post on X, she vowed to bring those responsible for the “cowardly murder” to justice, emphasizing, “No position or office is worth a person’s life.”
This latest attack highlights the perilous conditions facing political figures in Mexico, where attacks on politicians, especially at the local level, are alarmingly common. These violent acts are often linked to the entrenched narcotics trade and corruption that plague the country.
Lara’s murder occurred just two days after Cecilia Ruvalcaba, a councillor in Jalisco, was gunned down inside a hospital, further underscoring the growing danger faced by public officials.
Since 2006, criminal violence in Mexico has claimed nearly 480,000 lives, with political candidates increasingly becoming prime targets in this ongoing cycle of violence.
