Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called for a constitutional amendment to introduce a single six-year term for all elected political officeholders across Nigeria, replacing the current two-term system of four years each.
Speaking after Eid-el-Kabir prayers at his Ikolaba residence in Ibadan, Governor Makinde argued that a single extended term would allow leaders to focus more effectively on governance without the distractions of re-election campaigns.
“I have spent six years in office, and due to circumstances beyond our control—like the COVID-19 pandemic—we lost nearly a year. Coupled with continuous campaigning for a second term, only about five of the eight years are truly dedicated to governance,” Makinde explained.
He emphasized that a single five- or six-year tenure would enable governments to fully deliver on their mandates without the disruptions of political jockeying.
Makinde stressed that while the proposal requires constitutional changes, it is a viable model that should be seriously considered by the National Assembly. “We shouldn’t shy away from evidence-based policies that promote effective governance. This idea is not personal; it’s about improving our democratic process.”
The governor welcomed a delegation of Muslim leaders, traditional rulers, and political figures led by Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Lawal. The group included prominent personalities such as the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; former deputy governors Taofeek Arapaja, Hazeem Gbolarumi, and Hamid Gbadamosi; as well as the federal legislator Abass Agboworin and the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola.
In his remarks, Governor Makinde congratulated Muslim faithful for the Eid celebration and thanked them for their prayers and steadfast support throughout his administration. He urged continued cooperation to ensure sustained progress in Oyo State.
Deputy Governor Lawal urged the Muslim community to embody the virtues of obedience, trust, and sacrifice taught by the Holy Quran and commended the governor for his commitment to the welfare of workers through timely salary payments.
The delegation also expressed deep appreciation for Governor Makinde’s unwavering support of the Muslim community and offered prayers for his continued success.
