Maiduguri Flood: Over 2000 Inmates Escape From Correctional Centre

Severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has led to the escape of at least 286 inmates from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre.

The flooding, which began over the weekend and intensified on Monday, September 9, 2024, was exacerbated by the collapse of a spillway at the Alau Dam, causing a significant increase in water flow downstream.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo is currently in Maiduguri to assess the damage to the facility. Meanwhile, the spokesman for the custodial service Umar Abubakar disclosed that the Nigerian government is actively working to evacuate the correctional centre and is collaborating with other security agencies to ensure public safety.

In response to the flooding, the Nigerian Government has initiated evacuation efforts for residents of the affected communities. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been working to provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to flood victims.

The Borno State Government has opened Bakassi Camp to house those displaced by the disaster.

NEMA’s efforts follow an order from President Tinubu to immediately assist the victims of the flooding, which has impacted various areas including Shehuri, parts of the Government Residential Area (G.R.A.), Gambomi, Budum, Bulabulin, Adamkolo, Millionaires Quarters, Monday Market, and Gwange.
