Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Jolts Northern Chile’s Tarapacá Region

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Chile’s northern Tarapacá region on Sunday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 103 kilometers (64 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface, shaking the arid Andean terrain without immediate reports of injury or major structural damage.

Local authorities swiftly activated monitoring protocols and are continuing damage assessments. So far, no fatalities have been confirmed.

Chile, one of the most earthquake-prone nations in the world, sits atop the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire — a seismically active belt responsible for a significant percentage of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic activity.

The country has become a global model for seismic preparedness, with strict building regulations and a robust emergency response framework shaped by decades of experience.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and adhere to any instructions issued by national emergency services, particularly in case of aftershocks.
