The local government election in Osun State on Saturday saw a low voter turnout across the state. Reports from various local governments indicated that many polling units were empty, with no ad hoc staff from the State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) present at some locations.
In Osogbo, polling units such as Ogo-Oluwa, Alekunwodo, Olaiya, and Oja-Oba were notably devoid of voters, OSSIEC staff, and security personnel as of 9:15 am. Additionally, the voters’ list was missing at several of these units.
However, elections were held in Units 18, 19, and 20 in Ward 4, Ataoja D, where some activity was observed. Despite Governor Ademola Adeleke’s order for a restriction on vehicular movement from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. across the state, the directive was not enforced, as vehicles moved freely without restriction. That said, police had set up roadblocks along major roads.
In Ile-Ife, polling units also appeared deserted, with no sign of voters or OSSIEC ad-hoc staff at several locations. Most shops, markets, and malls in the area were closed, however.
In contrast, in Ede, the hometown of the governor, there was more activity. Voters were seen in some polling units, with OSSIEC staff present to assist them. At Obalaoye Grammar School, Unit 2, Ward 4, some voters were seen queuing at 8:00 am to cast their ballots. Similarly, at Oloba Atapara, Ward 1, Unit 6, a few voters were waiting for accreditation and to vote.
One voter, Nifemi Akingbala, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful process and encouraged others to vote without fear. Akingbala also praised the electoral body for ensuring a smooth and peaceful voting experience.
