Landslide Kills 1,000 in Sudan’s Marra Mountains, Village Wiped Out
At least 1,000 people have been killed in a devastating landslide in Sudan’s remote Marra Mountains, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A).
The disaster struck on Sunday after days of relentless rainfall, “leveling” much of Tarasin village and leaving just one known survivor, the group said in a statement.
Many of the victims were displaced civilians who had fled to the Marra Mountains from North Darfur, seeking refuge from fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi — an army ally — described the catastrophe as a “humanitarian tragedy” and called for swift action to aid survivors.
The SLM/A has appealed to the United Nations, regional bodies, and international relief agencies for urgent humanitarian assistance.
Sudan has been in turmoil since April 2023, when a power struggle between the army and the RSF erupted into civil war.
The conflict has fueled famine, mass displacement, and escalating violence, compounding the toll of natural disasters such as this latest landslide.
