The Lagos State government has announced that it will begin enforcing its ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) in two weeks. This enforcement will include the prohibition of Styrofoam and other plastic materials used for packaging, which was initially announced in January 2024 due to the growing environmental impact of plastic waste.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that the state government is committed to phasing out these plastics, with enforcement set to begin before the end of January 2025. Wahab noted a reduction in littering, particularly with Styrofoam, since the initial announcement of the ban and emphasized that there would be no reversal of this policy.
During an inspection of flood-prone areas and ongoing projects in Lagos Island, including the Ilubirin Waterfront, Wahab acknowledged that although infrastructure such as drainage and road networks were well built, human activities had led to the clogging of systems. He assured that the government was actively working on regenerating infrastructure on Lagos Island, with plans to speed up the contract timelines.
The enforcement of this ban is part of Lagos State’s broader effort to tackle plastic pollution and improve the environment.
