Lagos LG Polls: NNPP to Pick Candidates Through Consensus, Eyes Surprise Wins

Party adopts consensus mode for primaries, says it’s confident of securing seats in strongholds ahead of July 12 elections

The Lagos State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced that it will adopt the consensus method to select its candidates ahead of the July 12 local government elections in the state.

This was made known by the party’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos, Mr. Richard Benson, during an interview with journalists on Thursday.

Benson explained that the consensus approach was chosen to streamline the selection process and foster internal unity, especially in wards and councils with multiple aspirants.

“We are adopting the consensus approach for our primaries,” he said. “In places where we have many aspirants, we shall ask others to step down for the more popular and stronger candidates to fly the party’s flag.”

Although the exact date for the NNPP’s primary elections is yet to be fixed, Benson assured that the process would be conducted within the timeline provided by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

“We are fully involved and participating in the local government election in Lagos,” he added. “We are confident of winning some seats because we have areas where we are strong.”

When asked to disclose the party’s strongholds, Benson declined, stating that revealing such information would expose the party’s electoral strategy.

“Let’s keep our cards close. But I can assure you we’re going to spring surprises in this election,” he said.

The July 12 local government election is shaping up to be a significant test for opposition parties like the NNPP, as they seek to challenge the dominance of the ruling party in Lagos State.
