Lagos Expands Blue Line Rail with Arrival of New Train Sets
New coaches to boost Lagos transit system as Blue Line extension targets 2026 completion

The Lagos State Government has received a fresh batch of train sets for its flagship Blue Line Rail, reinforcing its commitment to upgrading urban transportation in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the arrival of three brand-new train sets, totaling 12 coaches, in a public statement on Thursday. The new additions are part of a broader effort to ease daily commuting across the state.
“It’s a step forward in our efforts to make the daily commute in Lagos less stressful and more reliable,” Sanwo-Olu wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The governor also disclosed that the state is moving ahead with plans to extend the Blue Line to Okokomaiko, with the project expected to be completed in 2026. He praised Lagosians for their continued support and patience as the government works to transform the state’s transit infrastructure.
First launched in September 2023, the Lagos Blue Line initially operated 12 daily trips. After a brief suspension in October of the same year, services resumed with an increased frequency of 54 trips per day, signaling growing demand for the route.
The recent delivery marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project — a key pillar of the government’s long-term plan to decongest traffic and modernize public transport.
As the state anticipates further expansions and system upgrades, commuters can expect more reliable service and improved coverage in the months ahead.
