Operation “Ember Months Stability” Targets Gridlock, Road Indiscipline, and Safety Breaches Across the State…
The Lagos State Government has launched an extensive 24-hour traffic management and enforcement operation to ease congestion and restore order across major routes ahead of the busy festive period.
Codenamed “Operation Ember Months Stability,” the initiative was announced by the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who said the effort underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring smooth traffic flow, enhanced public safety, and environmental discipline during the high-mobility season.
According to a statement issued by LASTMA, officers have been deployed across key transport corridors, including Ikorodu Road, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lekki-Epe Corridor, and Agege Motor Road, to enforce traffic regulations, discourage reckless driving, and sensitize motorists on safe road practices.
Bakare-Oki explained that the operation is being executed through a multi-agency task force coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa. The team includes personnel from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit, LAMATA, the Nigeria Police, LAWMA, and the Public Works Corporation.
As part of the coordinated efforts, the task force has carried out major clearance exercises in Apapa, Ijora, and Costain under-bridges, where over 250 illegal shanties were demolished. The operation also saw the removal of abandoned vehicles and makeshift settlements obstructing traffic. Authorities disclosed that a dummy firearm and dangerous weapons were recovered during the sweep, prompting renewed vigilance over public safety.
To maintain order in the reclaimed zones, commercial bus operators previously loading along the roads have been relocated to designated terminals and parks, while LAMATA has been directed to incorporate the cleared spaces into the state’s mass transit infrastructure.
Bakare-Oki also highlighted LASTMA’s prompt response to recent heavy-duty truck accidents at Kara Bridge and Otedola Bridge, noting that swift intervention helped minimize casualties and restore normal traffic flow.
He reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to sustain traffic discipline and ensure that Lagos roads remain safe, orderly, and congestion-free throughout the festive season and beyond.
