Lagos BRT Tragedy: Victim’s Family Refuses N1.5 Million Settlement

The family of a woman killed by a Lagos BRT driver has rejected the N1.5 million compensation offered by the state government, describing the amount as insufficient and insulting. The victim, Olabisi Ogunfuye, was fatally struck on Ikorodu Road on July 8, 2025.

Speaking on Thursday, Omodara Oluremi, the mother of the deceased, criticised the compensation package, saying it falls far short of what is needed to secure her children’s education. “The money they are offering is not enough to cover primary school fees, let alone secondary, university, or even a master’s degree,” she said. “My daughter worked hard to earn her master’s degree. If she were alive, she would have wanted her children to reach even higher academic goals. We want justice, not a token amount.”

The victim’s husband, Bolanle Ogunfuye, recounted that he was waiting for his wife, who had recently started a new job, to return home so they could take one of their sick children to the hospital. “That day was supposed to be ordinary, but tragedy struck. We were also preparing for our children’s birthdays that month”, he said.

The family’s lawyer, Festus Ogun, said the initial N1.5 million settlement proposal was “demeaning and insulting”.

He added that the BRT company even filed a court application to release the bus involved in the accident, a move the family opposed. “They were not focused on addressing the family’s grievances or providing fair compensation. Their priority was to get the vehicle back. It shows how little regard they have had for the family”, Ogun said.

The family insists that they will not accept the offer and are demanding proper justice and compensation that reflects the loss of their loved one.
