Party urges citizens to ignore ‘misinformation and political fear-mongering’ over fiscal changes
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that the Federal Government’s new tax reforms target low-income earners, describing such narratives as “misinformation, sensationalism, and political mischief.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, APC spokesman Mogaji Seye Oladejo said the reforms are designed to protect vulnerable Nigerians, expand tax exemptions, and create a fairer, more progressive tax system aligned with global best practices.
“The reform is not a weapon against the poor,” Oladejo said. “It targets efficiency, equity, and accountability, not punishment. Nigerians earning in the lowest income brackets are either fully exempt or will experience reduced tax exposure.”
The Lagos APC emphasized that the overhaul is necessary to modernize Nigeria’s tax system, which has long been characterized by fragmentation, overlapping mandates, leakages, and weak enforcement. According to the party, the reforms aim to simplify compliance for businesses, remove nuisance taxes, and create a more predictable fiscal environment for all enterprises, including micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.
For larger corporations, the party said the reforms ensure that profitable entities contribute their fair share to national development, calling the changes “pro-growth, pro-investment, and pro-Nigeria.”
Oladejo stressed that taxation is a tool to fund infrastructure, education, healthcare, security, and social welfare programs, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is rebuilding the social contract between citizens and government.
The Lagos APC urged Nigerians to resist fear-driven political narratives and to view the reforms beyond partisan lines. “Those spreading falsehoods on this policy are either ignorant of its provisions or motivated by political desperation,” the statement read.
The party also acknowledged the importance of public engagement, transparency, and careful implementation while cautioning that misinformation will be firmly rejected.
Concluding the statement, Oladejo said, “History shows that difficult but necessary decisions are the hallmark of responsible leadership. The new tax reform is one such decision designed not for the next election, but for the next generation.”
