The Labour Party caucus in the House of Representatives has accused embattled factional chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, of plotting to destroy the party from within, following his recent announcement of suspensions targeting key figures, including lawmakers and governors.
In a joint statement issued Thursday, three Labour Party lawmakers — Hon. Afam Victor Ogene (Caucus Leader), Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi (Deputy Leader) — described their suspension by Abure as “laughable” and called him a “dethroned emperor” desperate to retain relevance.
Abure had on Wednesday declared the suspension of the trio from the party, alongside the party’s only elected governor, Dr. Alex Otti of Abia State; Senator Ireti Kingibe; and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who serves as Secretary of the Labour Party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Nenadi Usman.
Reacting in a fiery statement titled “Our former National Chairman goes mad again,” the lawmakers said Abure had abandoned the mission of party unity and was now “focused on orchestrating its disintegration to appease external forces driving his actions.”
They added:
“It’s now evident to everyone that our former national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, has lost all credibility and seeks to destroy the party in a desperate move not to go down alone. His authority is nullified by the Supreme Court, yet he continues issuing sanctions like a shameless impostor.”
The lawmakers questioned Abure’s contributions to the party since the 2023 general elections, driven by the popularity of presidential candidate Peter Obi.
“What has Abure done since 2023 to enhance the fortunes of the party? From Kogi to Bayelsa, Ondo to Edo, it’s been failure after failure under his watch. All he and his cohorts have excelled in is running the party like a criminal enterprise, extorting aspirants for tickets.”
They also cited his alleged poor performance in Edo, noting that Abure failed to deliver his polling unit and had been involved in financial controversies.
The caucus condemned Abure’s media campaign, calling it an act of desperation.
“Which self-respecting national chairman spends his time hopping from one media house to another? After failing to replace the Caucus Leader, he’s now churning out fake suspension orders.”
Concluding, the lawmakers accused Abure of overseeing the destruction of the Labour Party’s credibility and internal cohesion.
“He’s supervising the burial of his own image and integrity. He has become the undertaker of the party’s soul. We sincerely wish him well — far away from the affairs of a serious political platform.”
