Kogi Police Ban Sale and Use of Fireworks Ahead of Festive Season

The Kogi State Police Command has imposed a total ban on the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and all types of pyrotechnics across the state as Christmas and New Year celebrations draw near.

The announcement was made by Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, in a statement issued on Tuesday through the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Aya.

The directive aims to prevent fire outbreaks, injuries, security breaches, and other risks often associated with the indiscriminate use of fireworks during festive periods.

CSP Aya stressed: “Any person or group found selling, possessing, or using fireworks—whether in private homes, public spaces, markets, or event centres—will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

He further stated that the command will intensify patrols, surveillance, and targeted operations across all parts of the state to ensure compliance.

The Commissioner of Police also urged residents, traders, community leaders, and event organisers to fully adhere to the directive and cooperate with law enforcement.

Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any illegal use or sale of fireworks to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency contacts.

The move follows a series of recent security breaches in Kogi State, prompting Governor Ahmed Ododo to issue a restriction requiring all social and religious activities to conclude by 4 p.m. daily until further notice.

Authorities have emphasized that the measures are preventive, aimed at safeguarding lives and property during the festive season.
