The Kebbi State Government has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) politically defunct in the state following the defection of three serving senators to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The senators — Adamu Aliero, Garba Maidoki, and Yahaya Abdullahi — formally announced their switch to the ruling party in what officials describe as a decisive blow to the already weakened opposition.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, said the exodus of the PDP’s top political figures effectively signals the end of the party’s influence in Kebbi.
“The party has been on life support for months,” the statement read. “The exit of Senators Adamu Aliero, Garba Maidoki, and Yahaya Abdullahi is the final nail in the coffin. These were the PDP’s strongest pillars. With their defection, the party has nothing left to stand on in Kebbi State.”
Ahmed credited the political shift to the governance style of Governor Nasir Idris, who assumed office in 2023. He stated that the governor’s achievements and inclusive leadership have drawn increasing support from across party lines.
According to findings by Daily Post, the defections have sparked anxiety among the few remaining PDP stakeholders in the state. Sources within the party reveal growing concerns over the viability of the PDP’s structure, with some insiders reportedly admitting that the party is now in disarray and struggling to remain relevant.
The wave of defections is expected to have significant implications ahead of future elections, potentially solidifying the APC’s dominance in the North-Western state.
